Dunblane & Stirling Beekeepers AssociationIf you are either an existing beekeeper, considering becoming a beekeeper, or perhaps just very interested in honeybees, their activities and products, then please do join us and develop your interest and passion. An active association, we have meetings all year round, from summer apiary (hive) visits to member's own or the association hives, through to winter lectures by visiting experts in various fields at the Cathedral Halls in Dunblane . We always welcome new members and would love to hear from existing and prospective beekeepers in our area. John Shearman and Magnus Peterson- John will talk about his experiences with mininucs and give advice on their use. Magnus will bring us up to date with the feral colony survey that he initiated last year on behalf of the SBA and also talk about his experiments using nuc boxes as a means of swarm control. Saturday 21 February 2009 Martin Buckle – Wax Modelling Martin comes from Buckinghamshire, and is in Scotland giving a weekend course on skep making at West Moss-side near Thornhill. He has offered to give us a talk on aspects of beekeeping while he is in our area. He is an experienced beekeeper and lecturer and also a senior honey judge for the BBKA. For further info please contact Secretary Peter Hunt. 7:30pm Tuesday 17 March 2009 - Cathedral Halls, Dunblane Cathedral John Hoskins “Hives and Things” John has been coming to our meetings for the last year or so and last summer hosted a very successful meeting at his apiary where he demonstrated his method of queen rearing. He will give us an insight into his method of making his own equipment and display some of his pictures on beekeeping topics. 7:30pm Tuesday 21 April 2009 - Cathedral Halls, Dunblane Cathedral Dr Gavin Taylor – Varroa resistance in the DSBA area Gavin gave us a talk last year on the future of beekeeping in the varroa era. Since then he has been working closely with one of our members, John McLean, on identifying hygienic behaviour and varroa resistant behaviour in local bee populations. He and John will bring us up to date with their findings and show us the signs to look out for in our own bees.
