Scotland in Bloom Achievments in 2006

Dunblane reached the finals for the third year running, unfortunately we did not win our class, described as a medium town of population size between 6,000 and 10,000. We were in competition with the other finalists namely Forres, Cupar Linlithgow, Galashiels and Strathaven. To have reached the finals is quite an achievement in itself, however to have won our class would have been even better.

We have competed in the Scotland in Bloom competition for the past three years and each year our class has been won by Forres. They have been competing for years and clearly have their basic infrastructure in place enabling them to concentrate on their floral displays.

We in Dunblane are still beginners and have a way to go before we reach this level of performance. This was our first experience working with plug plants and it has been a steep learning curve, nevertheless what we achieved this year has been quite remarkable, we have:

- Erected a large Poly Tunnel

- Built our own powered watering system

- Purchased some 7,000 plug plants and potted them on

- Purchased some 4,000 pansies ((plug plants) and potted them on for winter bedding

- Purchased a further 30 barrels to add to the 60 we already have, which had to be cleaned and painted before placing in situ and filling with soil

- Planted up some 90 barrels

- Prepared and planted several flower beds previously the responsibility of The local Authority

- Cleaned, painted and repaired a number of seats and have an on going program to provide more seats.

- Weeded the flower beds and barrels and throughout the dry periods

- Regularly watered the barrels and flower beds

- Litter picking is a constant occupation

Traveling around the country observing other communities displays and talking to the locals it is interesting to learn of the support given to them from their local Authority.

There is a considerable difference in the level of support between the local Authorities which can make all the difference in the competition between winning and losing
