Dunblane Development Trust - Environment News

Meeting 3rd February 2004, Stirling Arms Hotel

The main thrust of the meeting was to inform members of the appointment of Sandy MacKay as Dunblane in Bloom group leader, and to enlist DIB members to assist Sandy in his project, which was successfully done as 24 members volunteered.

Any other members or friends who wish to assist Sandy with his project may contact him on tel 822765.

The meeting then continued with a talk from guest speaker Keith Jackson from Falkland in Fife, who organises the Falkland in Bloom project.

Keith gave an excellent talk accompanied with a slide presentation which left everyone in know doubt about the size of the project in hand.

The meeting continued with a report on the various projects started in the summer of 2003.

Ochlochy pond successfully refurbished with the sluice gate repaired, the silt removed and a new settlement tank constructed, the banks reconstructed, four islands built for nesting sites, all areas worked have been reseeded with grass and wild flower mix, many bulbs have been planted by the Civic Society on the banks, who are also providing funds for the phase 2 improvements, many thanks are due to all who contributed both physically and financially, especially Ian MacLachlan of IKM Consulting Engineers without whom this project would not have happened.

The second phase will be to improve disabled access, by laying new a path from the Ochlochy Park entrance (at the sub station) to the burn bridge, improve the bridge by fitting new handrails and guarding, relay and extend the path at the Glen Road entrance, various benches have been refurbished by Andy MacLaren and will be placed around the park in the spring.

The memorial gardens and paths were tidied up and replanted around the memorial for the November 8th remembrance service by Lorna Inglis and her group, the heather beds in the memorial gardens will be refurbished in the spring, the memorial bridge is being surveyed for repairs after which the true cost will determined, two projects are being prepared, one to refurbish the Haining bank and one to replace the existing riverside paths for better disabled access especially from the Millrow carpark using ramps instead of steps. The rose garden at the entrance to the Laighills will also be refurbished in the summer.

The B8033 under the guidance of Monica Cessford has regular litter picks, this is due to uncaring motorists who throw their rubbish out of their cars, vans and trucks onto the verges and centre reservation, instead of taking the rubbish home or into a refuse bin.

The fourways roundabout is being replanted with a combination of permanent box hedging, dwarf rhodys, spring and summer bedding to give all year round colour supplied by Stirling Council.

The main thrust of our efforts has been to clear the banking next to the police station of brambles and debris, to allow the daffodils to flower once again this spring.

The banking will replanted with various native shrubs in the spring to give a long term low maintenance but attractive display.

The Bogside corner garden will be refurbished in the summer.

The new roundabout at the entrance to the QV school and the new Cala housing estate will be landscaped with the sponsorship of Cala Homes, giving a new and attractive entrance to the north end of Dunblane, this will be done as part of Dunblane in Bloom.
