ENGAGING WITH THE YOUNG.

In previous editions, I have emphasised how important it is that we forge closer links with the young ones in our community. They are being very well educated in our excellent schools, have good ideas and opinions to offer and will become the leaders, professionals and workforce for the future. Arguably, they have a more significant interest in the future of this community than us older ones.

We have tried to find one or two young people to join the Community Council as youth members, but this has been fruitless. However, discussions with the Pupil Council and David MacKenzie, Headmaster, at the High School are progressing towards setting-up a Community Council Youth Group at the school. We hope to:

  • Form a Community Council Youth Group with a nominated contact person (or persons).
  • Give them a brief introductory training session on the roles, responsibilities and main activities of the Community Council.
  • Send the minutes of our meetings and the agenda for the next meeting to the contact person(s).
  • The Youth Group will consider the minutes and the agenda and decide if they wish to make a contribution to the items covered. If so, they will have the option of:
  • Sending their comments by e mail or letter.
  • Attending the next meeting to deliver their comments.
  • Asking for a Community Councillor to meet with them at the school for discussions.
  • Any combination of these.

If anyone has any other ideas for developing contacts with our young people, please ring me on 822281.
