The Roman Catholic Bishopric of Dunblane was founded by David 1 about 1150 A.D. - Mainly because the town was a powerful centre of the old Celtic, or Columbian Church. The building of the Cathedral as seen today was largely the work of St. Clement, Bishop of Dunblane 1233 - 1258. By 1500 it was a very wealthy Diocese, and at the pinnacle of its power as a force in church and state affairs. Fifty years later, the Diocese was broken up at the Reformation, and due to lack of funds the roof of the nave fell in towards the end of the 16th century. It lay roofless and abandoned for almost 300 years.

This photograph of the nave was taken in 1885 shortly before the restoration of 1889 - 1893. From 1570 - 1893 the parish church in the cathedral consisted of the choir. The organ was first to be installed in any Scottish Cathedral in 1872, and was removed in 1892 when the wall it stood against was opened up between the restored nave and choir.
